A Standout Year for Kicking The Orb
I never truly grasped prior to the moment I observed the game with my old man. This occurred while I was staying to my childhood home smack in the heart of the international championship frenzy. The Italian team was in contention, and that meant everything to my dad, an immigrant from Abruzzo. Despite the fact that I always found the game dull, his energy was completely captivating that it kept me glued to the screen. I saw the matrix that day, instantly grasping all the electrifying complexities the game had to offer and accepting its deep-seated meaning. It was crucial that the Italian squad claim victory.
It's hard to describe the draw of games to those who are indifferent. One requires to witness that epiphany where it all makes sense for yourself — or, as a minimum, you need the right guide by your side to clarify the complex regulations and reveal the core essence of the activity. The past year proved that this is something a video game can pull off. 2025 gave us three exceptional soccer games that analyzed the game in very different, approachable ways.
The Cultural Touchstone: Despelote
The pivotal piece of that trio is Despelote. This indie game is a coming-of-age story set in the nation of Ecuador. On the surface, it's a fairly standard story about a young boy finding his way in the turn of the millennium and finding his voice. Yet, all of this occurs against the canvas of an all-consuming historic moment: Ecuador has qualified for the global tournament, and it is the primary thing happening in the characters' lives. Football games are on every display TV. They're broadcast during family events. It's the only thing anyone can focus on. The sport is everything.
Against this backdrop, we follow the young hero evolve. He isn't only figuring out where he fits in at a social gathering, but where he belongs within his community as well. The beautiful game is fundamental to his being, and it's through the game that he uncovers himself as a devoted Ecuadorian. It's the closest a digital experience has ever come to helping me understand my own dad and why he was so glued to the World Cup all those years ago.
The Physical Artistry: Rematch
Where Despelote concentrates on the emotional weight of soccer, two other games from this year encapsulate the intricacies of the game itself in more approachable ways than traditional simulators. Rematch, the most recent game from the creators behind Sifu, explores the raw physicality of soccer. This online experience reimagines the sport by recasting it as a frantic contest played between small teams. It borrows ideas from titles like Rocket League to create an accessible battle that's built around tight teamwork and masterful ball control.
My summer was consumed with Rematch for a few weeks this year. On the surface, it felt simple during my first few sessions, but every time I fired it up, I discovered greater complexity. Instead of just simple passes and shots, I mastered how to juke around opponents to sidestep a takeover. I mastered how to drop the ball to stop someone from knocking it away. I worked on my tricks until I could elevate a spectacular maneuver into a legitimate evasive action. All these advanced mechanics gave me insight into soccer in ways I could never grasp as a occasional fan. I walked away with a better respect for the vital importance physical mastery plays in the sport, finally seeing what a athletically impressive pursuit it truly is.
The Tactical Puzzle: Pup Champs
If Rematch illuminated the physical side of soccer, Pup Champs whimsically explored the mental side. The newest release from the developers behind Golf Peaks, Pup Champs is a card-based football puzzle game featuring canine athletes. Every level requires you to direct a few pups on a board and shoot the ball into a goal. Sounds easy, but the twist comes from the fact that each player has a specific kick pattern, they can only travel a set number of spaces, and there are blockers to navigate around. Solving a level calls for clever thinking and a tight control of the pitch. The sensation is like you're directing a high school soccer team, crafting the perfect strategies to guide your dogs to glory. This isn't a simulation version of the game by any means, but it's a delightful companion piece to Rematch.
A New Perspective
Of course, there were also additional titles about soccer, of course. Annual franchises arrived right on schedule and beloved management sims made their highly anticipated debut. However, thanks to these particular titles, I spent 2025 pondering soccer more than I have since that time. These titles allowed me to see the incredible skill that goes into a sport I'll simply never be proficient in (too much running!) and understand why soccer matters to countless people. It's a promising gaming trend I hope to see persist, with more creative interpretations to sports games that seek to communicate the spirit of a game rather than copying it 1:1. And, a few other games accomplished this for various games this year, whether it was the open-world bicycle races of Wheel World or the artistic odyssey of Skate Story. Even if you don't typically enjoy sports, there are a growing number of games out there that are ready to invite you into the club.
