Antony Price, Renowned for Creating Looks for Bowie and Duran Duran, Passes Away at Age 80.
Antony Price, the visionary style architect behind a series of unforgettable images worn by musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has passed away aged 80.
His reputation was built on his architectural shapes and dramatic aesthetics, such as the light-hued ensembles that featured in rock band Duran Duran's seminal music video for "their hit Rio".
"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' Duran Duran shared a message across their platforms."
Price's death comes just weeks after he presented his latest collection in London, his first in more than 30 years. Artist Lily Allen modelled a dress evoking the famous black velvet "dress" once worn by Princess Diana.
A Pioneering Career
Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price headed for London during the sixties to study at the prestigious Royal College of Art.
A year after graduating, he commenced his career designing clothing for men at Stirling Copper and was behind the form-fitting, button-fly pants that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger sported during the iconic group's Gimme Shelter tour in the late sixties.
He founded his own label in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show was launched by creations worn by the famed model Jerry Hall, who also wore the wedding dress Price designed for her for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.
Working with Legends
A key creative partner of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price designed the distinctive jacket the star wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His trademark skill to fuse tailoring for all genders along with his masterful technique in designing sculptural silhouettes established him as a "true original," according to the UK's fashion authority.
By the 1990s, he began working on pieces for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, including several ensembles for her American tour after becoming Duchess.
After a career spanning more than five decades, Price presented his final runway show in London just last month in partnership with the design house 16Arlington.
