Astronaut Shares Depression Following ‘Tsunami of Backlash After Historic Trip
A Vietnamese-American astronaut has spoken candidly about her struggle with mental health after enduring a massive wave of online abuse in the aftermath of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.
Amanda Nguyen – recognized as a researcher and activist – was part of the brief journey to space in April, which also featured well-known figures.
The high-profile flight was widely scrutinized by some, who questioned its cost and carbon footprint.
Reflecting on the experience, the astronaut, who made history as the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the intense backlash buried her dreams under an torrent of sexist abuse.
“I told her my depression might last for years,” she recounted in a online statement, referring to a check-in call from a fellow crew member in the period after the journey.
She characterized the press attention and digital reaction as an barrage beyond typical human coping.
“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she confessed. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”
Eclipsed by Backlash
Ms. Nguyen, who has conducted studies in gynecological science and conducted tests during the flight, said all her lifelong efforts – from her scientific research and astronaut training to the personal milestone of her heritage – was overshadowed under the tide of misogyny.
She is most acclaimed for her tireless campaigning protecting the rights of survivors of assault.
Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was paused after an attack during her university years, leading to a long campaign for accountability.
The Fog Begins to Lift
In the time since reaching space, she noted the “fog of grief has started to lift”, and she acknowledged the well-wishers whose kindness were her lifeline. “You all saved me,” she affirmed.
She noted that despite the negativity, significant positive outcomes had come out of the flight, including increased focus on her scientific work and new advocacy opportunities.
Flight Details
The self-operating New Shepard rocket lifted off from its launch site in the spring, carrying the six-woman crew on a short trip that passed the edge of space.
