The British tennis star secured the biggest success of his professional journey by coming back from a set down to overcome world No 1 Carlos Alcaraz with a stunning comeback in the early stage of the prestigious indoor tournament.

Although he had before beaten Alcaraz on two prior meetings, this win signifies Norrie's maiden victory over a sitting world number one.

Alcaraz looked to be moving confidently towards victory early on as he sailed in the initial stanza. However, the British contender gradually worked himself into the match by serving with improved accuracy and pulling the Spaniard into extended, demanding points. His relentless consistency and reliability slowly took its toll.

During large parts of the battle, Alcaraz served well but he found it challenging to find his timing off his groundstrokes. The young star seemed particularly uneasy hitting his forehand, which has been the top weapon in the sport for a large part of this season, producing 29 forehand unforced errors and a combined of 54 mistakes. Opposing him, the British player gave his opponent so few mistakes, maintaining his consistency, physicality and penetration throughout while delivering effective serves and selecting opportunities to advance inside the baseline and play aggressively.

Following battling for an extended period due to a major arm issue and difficulties with his form, the tennis professional slipped as low as 91st in the rankings this season.
