Record-Breaking Pollution Measurements

Multiple areas of the capital registered an AQI exceeding 500, which represents a tenfold increase over the healthy level recommended by the global health authority.

In some locations, concentrations of toxic particulate matter hit highs of 1800, equating to 15 to 20 times higher than acceptable limits.

Firecracker Restrictions and New Changes

Since 2020, authorities had enforced a comprehensive restriction on the purchase and ignition of fireworks during celebrations due to their significant contribution to the deadly pollution that engulfs the metropolis as winter sets in.

However earlier this year, the newly elected city government petitioned the judicial authority to request a modification of the restrictions.

Officials advocated for allowing "green crackers" – historically criticized by environmental experts as being only about 30% lower impact – as a balance between "tradition and public health".

Judicial Ruling and Implementation

Much to the frustration of environmental and health activists, the court complied with the appeal, mandating that green firecrackers could be used during specific time windows throughout the celebrations.

On Monday night, there was extensive violation of the designated hours across the metropolis, with minimal monitoring regarding whether the firecrackers being used were actually the eco-friendly version.

Several monitoring devices throughout Delhi recorded air quality peaking around late evening to the most severe levels observed during Diwali in at least three years.

Regional Consequences

The widespread use of pyrotechnics during the festival also sparked a controversy with bordering the neighboring country, with authorities in Pakistani Punjab province pointing to deteriorating air quality in the city of Lahore on pollutants traveling from neighboring India following the celebrations.

Chronic Environmental Issue

Alarmingly severe readings of pollution in the city have remained as a significant issue for over a decade and a half, with the condition gradually deteriorating.

Near the festival period, the amount of toxic airborne contaminants in the atmosphere has been documented to spike to 70% higher the most severe levels ever documented in China's capital, which was formerly viewed as the world's most polluted city.

Multiple Contamination Sources

This crisis in the capital is attributed to a convergence of different contributors including heavy vehicle emissions, construction debris, development work, waste incineration and smoke from agricultural fires in nearby states of farming communities.

In these regions, rural residents regularly burn crop residue to clear them quickly, producing hazardous smog that remains stagnant over the capital as cooler air sets in.

Health and Financial Impact

Both financial and medical consequences on the nearly 33 million people calling home the metropolitan zone is substantial, according to numerous investigations.

This pollution causes high levels of nervous system, heart and circulatory and respiratory conditions, and can even lead to cancer.

Air quality crisis is calculated to be accounting for approximately 10k untimely deaths annually in the capital.
