Democrats Condemn Trump After He Suggests They Should Face Death Penalty
Democratic officials expressed fury after Donald Trump charged a coalition of Democratic legislators of being "betrayers" and stated they should be detained and sentenced "by death" following their release of a controversial video.
The Message That Triggered the Controversy
The recorded message, published on Tuesday, includes six Democratic congress members who formerly acted in military or defense capacities.
"Like us, you all swore an oath to safeguard and defend this constitution," the lawmakers declared in the brief video. "At present, the risks to our governing document don't only come from overseas, but from right here at home. Our laws are clear, you can reject improper directives, you can decline illegal orders, you have to decline illegal orders. No one has to execute commands that violate the legal system or our national charter."
Trump's Angry Reply
The recorded statement reportedly prompt a furious reaction from the ex-president.
On later in the week, Trump posted on Truth Social: "This represents SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these betrayers to our United States should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In a separate publication, he stated: "This is really concerning, and Risky to our United States. Their words cannot be enabled to stand. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a third publication, he continued: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, liable by DEATH!" He also redistributed a declaration that stated: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Opposition Officials React
Following Trump's remarks on that day, Top Democrats published a joint statement censuring the statements.
"Political violence has no role in this nation," they stated. "Representatives who appeared in the video all worked our country with great patriotism and excellence. We strongly condemn Donald Trump's appalling and risky threats of violence against members of Congress, and appeal to GOP representatives to vigorously do the same."
The opposition officials also stated that they had been in touch with protective services "to ensure the protection of these officials and their relatives."
"Donald Trump must without delay take down these radical digital publications and withdraw his violent rhetoric before he causes harm," the declaration continued.
Officials' Defiant Answer
The representatives who were featured in the video also released a response.
"We serve as former service members and security experts who value this nation and swore an pledge to defend and support the national charter of the United States," they stated. "This commitment continues forever, and we intend to keep it. No warning, intimidation, or incitement will stop us from that important responsibility."
"The most revealing aspect is that the president views it liable to punishment by execution for us to repeat the legal requirements," they continued. "Armed forces members should know that we have their protection as they execute their vow to the founding principles and duty to adhere to only proper directives. It is not only the right thing to do, but also our responsibility."
They continued: "The entire nation must come together and censure the ex-president's demands for our execution and ideological conflict. This is a moment for principled stance."
More Political Reactions
The Senate Democratic leader also condemned Trump's statements and published on social media: "It's important to understand: the ex-commander in chief is calling for the death of government members."
He continued: "This is an outright THREAT. Each congressional member, all representatives, all citizens – without partisan consideration – should censure this immediately and unconditionally."
The Conservative official defended Trump's allegation that the Democrats had been involved in "rebellion", describing the video as "highly unsuitable", commenting: "It is very risky, you have leading members of the government instructing soldiers to ignore directives, I think that is unprecedented in US history."
The Republican leader also reportedly informed media outlets that in what he examined of Trump's messages, Trump was "describing the offense of rebellion" but that "attorneys have to examine the wording and decide all that."
Administration Response
During a executive branch meeting on that day, when asked by a reporter, "Would the president want to execute elected officials?", the administration spokesperson answered: "No."
"It's important to note about what the president is addressing," the representative said. "There are sitting members of the American legislature who coordinated to arrange a video message to individuals of the American armed forces, to current military personnel urging them to ignore the executive's lawful orders."
She stated: "The integrity of our armed forces relies on the chain of command, and if that system is broken, it can cause people getting killed, it can result in disorder, and that's what these members of Congress ... are basically supporting."
