DJ Warras was gunned down by a man with dreadlocked hair in the middle of the day, police say.

A prominent South African media personality and entertainer has been fatally gunned down in the country's largest city Johannesburg, causing national outrage across a country battling rampant crime.

Warrick Stock, popularly known as DJ Warras, was gunned down in the city centre on the afternoon of Tuesday.

Police said the forty-year-old presenter was approached by a trio of assailants, with one opened fire on him before running away.

The purpose behind the incident is unknown and no one has been arrested are in custody, police said.

Details of the Attack

Authorities indicated that Stock was attacked as he was departing from a premises in the vicinity of the city center landmark.

He had been present for hours at the building supervising the implementation of security systems, which had been controversially occupied by squatters, according to reports.

"The report indicates the man was approached by three unidentified men after parking his vehicle, and they shot at him before running from the location on foot," a police statement said.

CCTV footage showed a man with dreadlocked hair and dressed in what appeared to be a guard's attire firing shots on Stock before fleeing.

The DJ tried to run away after he was shot but fell down on the opposite side of the road.

Police added that Stock had an unused firearm and it was not a robbery during the assault.

Crucial forensic evidence, like cartridges, were discovered at the crime scene.

Investigation Ongoing

Police have appealed members of the public who may have witnessed the attack to contact them.

"Our information indicates they walked a long distance after the shooting, and officers have been attempting to locate them to determine their location," stated a police chief.

Outpouring of Grief

His family member, a close relative, expressed the loved ones are reeling to come to terms with the loss.

"I am in shock. I don't have words," were her words.
"It is clear he was a representative for countless citizens. He was a fearless commentator about issues not many people were ready to tackle. This is a profound tragedy."

She requested the citizens to refrain from sharing explicit content from the incident, explaining this was an incredibly difficult time, above all for Stock's children.

A Multifaceted Career

Stock was the host of Ngicel' iVisa, a reality show that aired on a South African digital satellite entertainment channel.

Beyond his media career, Stock was involved in various commercial activities, including private security, providing VIP protection services and protecting high-profile events across South Africa.

He was also said to be engaged in property management and participated in building evictions.

His murder has shocked the country and prompted an wave of remembrances from his fans, the government and political parties.

A cabinet official remarked he was furious and grief-stricken by Stock's untimely death.

"He was forthright boldly and honestly. He even spoke up against me and my policies as a minister. He was a shining model of who we ought to be," was his tribute.

A party figurehead stated the "audacious attack of DJ Warras in the middle of the day is a trauma for all South Africans".

A media executive expressed that "DJ Warras was more than just a face of a reality series. He was a gifted communicator, a true devotee of sound and a kind-hearted individual who brought happiness and vitality to every appearance. His artistic passion left an indefinable mark."

In a release, the broadcaster he worked for declared Stock was known for his charisma, approachability and sharp wit, adding that his memory "will endure".
