New York City Mayor Eric Adams to Endorse Andrew Cuomo in NYC Mayor's Election

NYC's current mayor Mayor Adams revealed his plan to back former Governor Cuomo in the upcoming mayoral race, even after months of strained relations between the pair of Democrats.

An Unexpected Turnaround After Recent Criticism

Just last month, Adams had strongly criticized the former governor, calling him a “deceptive figure and a untruthful person” and accusing him of having “a career of marginalizing Black political contenders.” However, in a new development, Mayor Adams reversed course, announcing he now plans to support the former governor in communities where he maintains significant backing.

“It is crucial to really wake up the Black and brown communities that have suffered from urban displacement on how vital this race is,” Adams remarked.

He added, “Residents have seen their housing costs rise in terms of neighborhood changes and they have been disregarded in those neighborhoods, and I plan to visit to those communities and speak one on one with community leaders and organizations and I will appear with the former governor in those areas and get them motivated.”

Race Dynamics and Recent Events

The mayoral contest has so far been dominated by the struggle between the former governor and democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani, whose rise in the polls has made headlines internationally and symbolized hopes for a revitalized progressive wing of the Democrats.

In a latest mayoral debate, both the democratic socialist and GOP candidate Curtis Sliwa stated they would refuse Adams’s endorsement if offered.

Earlier this year, the mayor had launched his re-election campaign as an unaffiliated candidate after being indicted on federal corruption charges which were later dismissed in return for his assistance with federal immigration raids across New York City.

At an separate media briefing on Thursday, the mayor answered reporters inquiring into the endorsement plan by stating, “I'm meeting Andrew this evening.”

The announcement came a day after the two politicians were seen sitting courtside together at the the NBA team's first game at the famous arena, which occurred right after a heated candidate debate.
