New York's next mayor confirms his intention to make his home in the storied Gracie Mansion
New York City's Mayor-Elect, Zohran Mamdani, will opt to take up residence in the traditional Gracie Mansion, vacating the affordable apartment that became a focal point during his run for office.
An Iconic Home
Built in 1799, Gracie Mansion has been the primary dwelling for nearly all New York City mayors since the World War II era.
But, Mamdani, for whom affordable housing is a central policy, hesitated to declare his residency plans immediately after his triumph in November.
"The choice rested on our family's safety and the imperative to dedicating all of my focus on enacting the affordability agenda New Yorkers voted for," stated Mamdani in his announcement.
A Fond Farewell
He resided in the Queens borough of Astoria, an area famous for its vibrant immigrant communities and culinary diversity.
"To my neighbors in Astoria: many thanks for exemplifying the true spirit of New York City," Mamdani's statement said.
"While I may no longer live in the neighborhood, the community will always live a part of me and my work," he added.
Campaign Controversy
During his campaign, Mamdani linked his key pledge – a rent freeze – to his personal living arrangements.
Yet his critics, most notably ex-governor Andrew Cuomo, challenged Mamdani for living in the rent-stabilized unit even though he hails from a famous family.
Not All Mayors Stayed
Not every mayor have opted to reside at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the former mayor, chose to live in his private home on Manhattan's Upper East Side during his three terms, which wrapped up in 2012.
In his view, Bloomberg argued it could serve as a venue for public city functions, and championed significant upgrades of the historic mansion.
A Grand New Home
When Mamdani moves into Gracie Mansion near his swearing-in on 1 January, he will experience surroundings a stark contrast to his modest Astoria apartment.
Featuring butter yellow paint, green shutters, and white railings, Gracie Mansion is a wedding cake of a house situated by the East River.
Within, the lower floor of the historically styled mansion is furnished consistent with the home's historical period.
The compound, which allegedly has five bedrooms, also includes enhanced security to protect the mayor and his family.
Haunted History
Some residents have alleged that Gracie Mansion also has supernatural lodgers.
Chirlane McCray, the wife of former mayor Bill De Blasio, once said that they experienced doors opening and shutting on their own, and the floors emitted odd sounds.
Former Mayor Eric Adams was even more convinced. "It doesn't matter what anyone says," he insisted in 2022. "It has spirits in there, man."
The Value of Rent Stabilization
His former home is rent-stabilized, a policy where the city sets limits on how much building managers can hike the monthly cost each year.
New Yorkers consider these apartments crucial resources as the price of rent outpaces the average income.
Data indicated Mamdani paid about $2,300 each month for his apartment.
Based on data from the real estate platform Zillow, the typical monthly cost for a single-bedroom unit in New York City is $3,500 a month.
