The Finnish Team Stuns Back-to-Back Reigning Title Holders the United States in U20 World Championship Quarterfinal Round.

Arttu Välilä scored the decisive goal at two minutes and eleven seconds of overtime as Finland engineered a remarkable four to three victory over the reigning two-time champion American team on Friday evening in the world junior hockey quarter-finals.

"We must give credit to the United States," remarked Finland's leader A. Kiviharju. "They are a hell of a team, full of great players and a superbly organized team. But I mentioned we wanted that payback from the previous final, and I believe we kind of earned it this evening."

In the semifinal matches on Sunday, the Finns will face the Swedish team, while the Canadians will play the Czech Republic. Sweden beat Latvia six to three, Team Canada produced a first-period five-goal outburst in a 7-1 romp over the Slovakian team, and the Czechs overcame Switzerland by a 6-2 margin.

Thrilling Third Period and Overtime

The Michigan State Spartan L. Ryker tied it for the United States with 1:33 remaining in regulation and the University of Notre Dame netminder Nick Kempf off for an extra attacker.

L. Tuuva and Joona Saarelainen scored in a 55-second span in the third period to hand their team a 2-1 advantage. Tuuva tied it at two-all with seven minutes and seventeen seconds to go, then assisted on Saarelainen’s go-ahead goal with 6:22 on the clock. Saarelainen also assisted on Tuuva’s goal.

Notable Contributions and Post-Game Comments

The BU defenseman C. Hutson had a goal and an assist for the United States after being struck in the head against the Swiss and missing the next two contests.

"In my opinion we made good plays for most of the game," the defenseman said. "But the little bounces that they got, a lot of their high-quality opportunities came from our mistakes."

His university colleague C. Eiserman gave the United States a two to one edge on a power play with nine minutes and forty-five seconds remaining in the middle frame. He accepted a pass from Hutson and fooled the Finnish goaltender with a one-timer from the right circle.

C. Hutson tallied on a fast break thirty-five seconds into the second period. Heikki Ruohonen tied it at four minutes and forty-six seconds on a snap shot from the left side.

Goaltending Stats

  • Finland's goalie saved twenty-eight attempts.
  • Kempf recorded twenty-one stops.

The U.S. squad fell in their final two games – falling 6-3 to the Swedes on Wednesday in the group finale – after winning their first three.

"It was an privilege to coach this group," said the American bench boss. "They played a great game tonight and came up just short. All credit to the Finns. It's an empty emotion at the moment, but our players left everything on the ice."
