UN:Me: An Cerebral Thriller That Blends Survival Horror with Among Us Mechanics
The latest Day of the Devs digital showcase unveiled several intriguing future games, but one especially has captured attention: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo adventure appears to fuse together the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill title with the paranoid deduction heart of Among Us.
"This is a unique game where a young woman containing several human souls within her needs to flee from a maze of the psyche," states producer Yasukazu Kawai.
Stepping Into a Fractured Consciousness
In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed heroine seeming to be of teenage years. Inside her exist four separate personas, all possessing their own anxieties and motivations. These entities can take over spontaneously, unleashing their deep-seated phobias upon her without warning.
Based on showcased footage, much of the narrative takes place within a eerie hospital, while other scenes depict the main character exploring a desolate chapel.
An Environment of Individual Dread
"What are you fearful of? What makes you uncomfortable?" poses game director Shun Sasaki. "High places. Small rooms. Authority figures. Things that appear minor to others can trigger something primal within us. This game delves into that concept — fears that are specific to each person."
The core mechanic involves managing whichever soul surfaces at a particular moment. However, these identities will switch involuntarily during gameplay. During exploration, each soul's anxieties become exaggerated and attack the protagonist one after another. As the persona changes, so does the particular terror the player experiences.
Unsettling Aesthetics and a Fatal Decision
Initially, UN:Me displays striking aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill franchise. The hospital is populated by nurses all sporting the identical visage, with disturbingly broad smiles. Patients in the lobby have enormous flowers growing from their necks should be. Flowers are an ever-present element, juxtaposing organic elegance with unnatural horror.
Yet, UN:Me presents a unique twist. Players must determine which of the four entities inhabiting the protagonist is the "true" one. "Each of the personas asserts that the body belongs to them," explains a creator. "During the game, you need to figure out who is real."
Once players believes a persona is fake, they must eliminate it. But, since every entity can deceive or obfuscate the truth, it is incredibly simple to choose incorrectly.
"Maybe you've already destroyed the true [soul] by your own actions," a voice states. "The last one remaining could be a fake. Either way, your choices are irreversible."
UN:Me currently lacks a publicly announced launch window, but it is can be follow on platforms.
