Wealthy businessman Isaacman has been voted in as the new administrator of NASA, capping an atypical selection saga where President Donald Trump put his name forward, withdrew it, and then submitted his name once more.

The 42-year-old, an aviation enthusiast who was the first civilian to undertake a spacewalk, is also the first agency head in decades to come entirely from outside public service.

For many, the success of his leadership will be judged on one pivotal challenge: its ability to return humans to the Moon ahead of the Chinese space program.

The President has emphasized a desire for the US to build a sustained presence on the moon, both to enable mining operations and to serve as a stepping stone for travel to Mars.

Confirmation Vote and Political Dynamics

On Wednesday, the Senate cleared Isaacman's nomination with a bipartisan vote.

The President initially pulled the nomination in the spring, pointing to a "thorough review of previous relationships".

At the period, the president was publicly feuding with tech billionaire Musk, one of his biggest supporters, with whom Isaacman has business connections.

Isaacman indicates he is now aligned with the presidential objective to mine the moon, placing him in disagreement with Elon Musk, who has stated that focus on the moon is a diversion from the primary objective of reaching Mars.

Vision for NASA

In the current cosmic competition, countries are racing to tap into the Moon.

“This is not the time for delay but a time for action because if we lose ground, if we err, we may not recover, and the results could change the balance of power here on Earth,” Isaacman told the Senate committee earlier this month.

The billionaire entrepreneur sees introducing more industry players as key to achieving those goals, according to a circulated memo laying out his vision for the agency.

In his testimony, he supported the blueprint, which he crafted when he was initially selected, but noted it was a developing document.

His welcoming of competition could also lead to tension with SpaceX. Recently, he commended the issuance of a lucrative deal to Jeff Bezos's company, which is one of the main challengers of Musk's SpaceX.

In the document, he suggested the agency should forge stronger ties with the scientific community, envisioning the agency as a "amplifier for research".

He pointed to the planned 2027 launch of the Roman Telescope as a cornerstone project.

"Should we be close to something groundbreaking - like launching Roman - I will consider all avenues to get the program to the pad, even using my own resources if that's what it requires to deliver the science," he stated.

Personal Fortune

According to estimates, his fortune is pegged at approximately 1.2 billion dollars, made mostly from his financial services firm and the divestment of his company that provided flight training and operated a private fleet of military aircraft.

The NASA administrator role will be his first job in politics, a departure from the previous two appointees appointed as NASA chief.

He will succeed the former transportation secretary, who has acted as interim NASA chief since July.
